What is Washington Reading Corps?

Washington Reading Corps is a statewide initiative that helps K-6 students improve their reading abilities through research-based tutoring and effective collaborations among schools, families, community members, National Service Programs, businesses, and state partners. Here's what the southwest Washington branch accomplished last year:

Tutoring

Volunteer and student reading

Volunteers

Over 1,400 volunteers were recruited by the WRC program for a wide variety of projects. These volunteers served 8,000 hours in the community. This includes:

Family Literacy Events

We had 60 evening literacy events for students and families, with themes such as book exchanges, Dr Seuss' birthday, and more. 96% of families attending reported them to be valuable.

"In one year, you will become a fixture in at least a few hundred kids' lives. Children who don't have much support or structure at home will come to school, expecting to see you and looking forward to your presence."

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps plays an important role supporting the literacy programs of partner schools. Full-time AmeriCorps VISTA members focus on school-wide literacy efforts such as after-school programs and managing volunteers. AmeriCorps USA members provide tutoring to young readers.

Educational Service District 112 has been the WRC sponsoring agency throughout Southwest Washington since 1998. ESD 112 partners with local, state and national programs to improve literacy education for struggling readers.
